Jesus opens this section by discussing a passage that concerned false witness, the subject of the ninth commandment. He then continues that theme by considering how to be a true witness to God’s nature when dealing with an enemy. Finally he turns to three ‘pillars’ of Judaism - alms-giving, prayer, and fasting. Taking each in turn, he shows how they can be used to mislead before suggestion how they should be practised.
