The traditional location of the Biblical Mount Sinai gives its name to the Sinai Peninsular, the wilderness that lies between the horns of the Red Sea. The mountain continues to attract pilgrims in the hope of an encounter with God.

Mt. Sinai also went by the names of Horeb and Mountain of God. It was there that both Moses and the prophet Elijah had significant encounters with their Lord.

Speaking from a burning bush on that mountain, God commissioned Moses to rescue Israel from captivity in Egypt. Moses then led their exodus back to Mt. Sinai. Once there, Moses assisted the infant nation of Israel to establishing a covenant with their divine Saviour. The Ten Commandments that formed the centrepiece of the Israelite’s law were given as part of this interaction.

On a later occasion the Lord later hid Moses amongst the rocks of the mountain whilst the Glory of God passed by. The prophet Elijah had a similar encounter with God whilst hiding on this mountain.
